LAYERS

LAYERS – A transdisciplinary Dance Performance

LAYERS investigates the experiences that emerge when elements of music, painting, and dance are transferred and perceived across different media. Based on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research questions, the project applies transmedial methods and principles from choreography and dance practice, opening new transmodal spaces of perception. These methods translate parameters and essences between media, generating sensory traces that relate to each other concretely or subtly, allowing the audience to “discover the music in the image,” “perceive the image in the music,” “see the music in the body,” and “experience rhythm through the body in space.”

The performance consists of seven scenes, including a physical introduction that sensitises the audience’s senses. Scenes such as Rhythm from Dark to Light, Konnakol Meets Letter-Dynamics, Glitter-Rhythm, Ode – to the Time, One Line, and Interplay Between Three explore the translation of media principles, while the collage-like structure shifts focus between sight and hearing to deepen perception. Three gauze fabrics hanging from the ceiling represent music/rhythm, dance, and image, creating spatial depth and interactive stage spaces.

The work is informed by practice-led research, illustrating how transmedial principles enrich
choreography and staging. It engages with synaesthesia and multisensory perception, offering an
immersive experience where usual boundaries between media and senses are blurred and
audience perception is consciously sensitised.
